Shopify is deprecating checkout.liquid by August 13, 2024. This doesn't mean the era of customization is over; it opens a new door to many possibilities.

However, it's hard to get it right the first time when customizing the checkout page. Hence, a checkout test will be a crucial step to help merchants figure out how to customize the checkout page effectively.

ABConvert understands this need and has thus released a brand new feature called "Checkout Test."

What can you test with the Checkout Test

In our checkout test, merchants will be able to test the following parts in this release:

  • Payment Customization: Supports testing hide, rename, and reorder payment methods at the same time.

  • Delivery Customization: Supports testing hide, rename, and reorder delivery methods at the same time.

  • Checkout UI Extension: Supports testing dynamic blocks with predefined test types.

In the future, we will continue to roll out new features for checkout testing. Here is our roadmap:

  • Thank You Page & Order Status Page Test

  • Advanced Display Rules

  • Advanced Dynamic Content Blocks

  • Checkout Test for Other Extension Points

Steps to Start a Checkout Test

Pressed for time? Watch our quick video guide here: Check it out!

Step 1 - Create New Test

Visit the "Create New Test" tab, and you will see a new test option called "Checkout Test." Click the button to create a new checkout test page.

You will see there are currently three types of checkout tests. Select the one that you want to test.

Step 2- Set Up Variants

Similar to our other tests, you will need to set the traffic percentage for each variant and set up the variant settings. Currently, we support up to 5 variants to test at the same time.

For payment and delivery customization tests, you can add one or more operations to a variant. The available operations are:

  • Hide: Hide a certain method.

  • Rename: Rename a certain method.

  • Reorder: Move a certain method to a different position.

For checkout UI extension tests, you can test different dynamic block templates.

To ensure your checkout UI test runs correctly, you will need to add a dynamic block in Settings -> Checkout -> Customize.

Click "Add App Block" and add the ABConvert checkout block to any extension point where you want to display the dynamic block. Our app will then display different variants to the extension target you set.

Once this is set, you can start a checkout UI test.

Step 3 - Preview your test

After you start a test, you can preview it by visiting our analytics dashboard. Click the preview link and visit the checkout; you will see the variant displayed in the checkout.

Step 4 - Monitor your test result

We record checkout events and display them in the analytics dashboard. You can monitor the conversion funnel at each step in the checkout process to determine which variant is the best.

You can update the payment/delivery methods based on our test results. For the checkout UI extension, you can set the winning variant to 100% and keep the test running.

Conclusion

In this article, we explain how to start a checkout test to improve your conversion rate.
